What does it say on the tin?

Daniel will become a role model during this unit on prayer. Create an environment that will provide an opportunity for these children to experience God’s greatness in answering their prayers like those of Daniel. Children at this age expect God to hear and answer their prayers. This unit provides the proof!

  • Lesson 1: Daniel Obeys God
    Daniel 1 – Daniel refuses to eat the king’s food. Instead he obeys God’s laws. Daniel is rewarded with the best job in the kingdom.
  • Lesson 2: Daniel Prays
    Daniel 6:1-10 – Some men are jealous of Daniel’s top position in the kingdom. They trick the king into declaring that no one is allowed to pray to any god or man except him. The penalty for not praying to the king is to be thrown into a den of lions. Daniel chooses to pray to God.
  • Lesson 3: Daniel Trusts God
    Daniel 6:11-18 – Daniel trusts God to protect him from the lions. The king, who doesn’t want Daniel to die, and doesn’t know of God’s greatness, worries all night. Trusting in God is the best way to live.
  • Lesson 4: Daniel Is Protected By God
    Daniel 6:19-23, 25-27 – God protects Daniel from the lions. The king learns to put his trust in the living God. We can trust God to hear and answer our prayers too.

  • What is the overall quality of material presentation?

    Good quality material with a helpful overview introduction and four solid sessions based on Daniel’s life. The sessions can be accessed by Word Doc and lay out the session in chronological order including outcomes, supplies, comprehensive guidance and templates needed for the session.

    How clear are its aims and outcomes?

    Outcomes are listed at the beginning of each session in the form of what children will be able to do as a result of the lesson. For example, when learning about Daniel, one aim is to ‘know the Bible person who chose to pray during a difficult time’.

    How accessible are the leader’s notes?

    Leader notes are comprehensive but clear. Language is accessible and instructions are clearly laid out. All content for the sessions is provided in the document so there is no unnecessary navigation to other sites or resources. Titles for activities are consistent throughout the series so once one session is done, the leader will know what to expect going forward.

    Who could lead it?

    Children’s Workers and those familiar with working with children are best to lead this series, as the children are old enough to have serious questions which need informed answers. The session instructions provide everything the leader needs to say and do, so there is no need for improvisation if the leader is not confident with implementing their own content.

    Participant resources are all paper based and cut out and coloured in. These vary depending on the session but are good, easy and simple to prepare. They are also all relevant to the theme, for example, makingVIP badges when learning about how important they are to God.

    Preparation should be relatively short. Each section of each session lists the supplies needed and these are often if not always included in the instructions or available in a standard craft cupboard. Leaders need to ensure they have all materials, have read through the sessions and on-boarded any extra help. For example, in one session a parent or two need to come in and talk about their jobs at the start. Facilitators may be needed for larger groups.

    Interaction is key throughout this unit with children interacting with one another, the leader and facilitators who may come and help out too. They take part in Bible story telling, crafts, games and easy, age appropriate discussion.

    Children aged 4 - 6 years will use all five senses to explore and discover the story of Daniel and what it means to them. Children at this age are curious and animated beings so this resource includes options for them to learn by: puppets, objects to touch, feel, and even taste. Using this approach the children learn about Bible people, and connect Daniel’s life to their own lives and respond to God's Word.

    How adaptable is it to my situation?

    This series is designed to be run with children aged 4 - 6 years old and is a four week unit which must be run in chronological order. The focus is on prayer and how to use prayer in their daily lives to get to know God and trust him.The sessions can be used during Sunday school or as an after school club and are written down word for word with what to do, they also include one bonus activity if leaders have more time. Each session runs for approximately 45 minutes but can be extended if leaders want to spread out the activities longer. The sessions should be done in the running order they are given in as each section leads on to the next. Preparation is relatively straight forward and easy with the majority of resources needed being in the instructions, or in a standard craft cupboard. Each part of this resource aims to have a biblical basis with a fun activity to help make it accessible. Best for group no bigger than 30 children and a brilliant choice if teaching children about prayer as a tool for discipleship.     How well does it encourage people to work together in applying the material?

    Children apply the material during the section on ‘what does this mean to me?’ and ‘what can I do to please God?’ The first section uses interactive and fun methods to teach children what the story means to them in concept. The next section then helps them understand how to apply this practically. Each session specifically talks to children about prayer and why it is powerful.

  • How much of the material is Bible-based?

    Approximately 20 minutes depending on how long teachers allocate to each section. This time is spent on three parts of the session: bible talk, review and memory verse.

    How well is the biblical material presented and used?

    Bible material is presented by the leader talking, and dialogue between puppets (the cut outs for these are provided). Children then review the story and learn a memory verse through play to finish up the main teaching.

    How well does it apply biblical material to everyday life?

    The series applies the material to everyday life most directly during the ‘what does this mean to me?’ section after the teaching, and the ‘what can I do to please God?’ section. For example, in session 4, after learning about Daniel being alive in the lions den after praying to God and trusting him, children are asked “who can we trust to answer our daily prayers?” encouraging good discipleship tools, and application to everyday life.

  • How well does it inspire people towards whole-life discipleship?

    Children learn about Daniel; a young Hebrew boy, who put his trust in God. Early in life he found that obedience to God's laws was the best way to live. He obeyed God's dietary laws and was rewarded. That, and the character he developed by obeying God, landed him the best role in a foreign kingdom and the trust of a king too. Daniel provides the children with an example of a person who devoted to living every day for God, regardless of whether that meant he was in trouble in this world. This series teaches lots about prayer and God answering prayer. The children are encouraged to put their trust in God as Daniel did.

    How well does it encourage and enable people to grow in their faith?

    This unit features ordinary people empowered by God to do extraordinary things. Children learn that in the same way Daniel was able to achieve great things by trusting God, they can do the same in their lives too. Children learn this by answering questions about the story, and responding to what they mean during the ‘what does this mean to me’ activities.

    How well does it stretch faith and vision of God and his purposes?

    Children learn that when Daniel was forced to make a decision concerning who he should pray to, without hesitation he went to his room, and bowed in prayer to God. Even when doing this meant he was then thrown into a den of lions, Daniel put his trust in God for protection. He knew his prayers for help would be heard and answered. As Daniel was led to the lions' den, he prayed and trusted God. Daniel is a role model of unconditional trust in God to hear and answer prayers. Children should be encouraged to imitate Daniel's example, and learn that through trusting and praying to him, his purposes for their lives will flourish.

    How well does it connect with real life issues?

    This resource is more focussed on the power of prayer and trusting God with our requests so links real life issues to prayer. For example, children may be asked what the best thing is to do if worried or scared. They may answer that they would speak to their parents, but the guidance also reminds them one of the best things to do is to pray to God.
