What does it say on the tin?

Welcome to lyfe

Lyfe provides small group sessions, events and other useful resources to help people discover a deeper life with God. Lyfe helps people to grow holistically and to experience a transforming relationship with God through Scripture and spiritual practices that have inspired and sustained Christians throughout the centuries.
Developed with Renovaré, our dedicated small group sessions are free to use as often as you like. Whether your group meets in a pub, coffee shop or at home you can either print off each session in advance or download them to your tablet or smartphone. Each session is easy to lead, highly relational and helps people to discover a balanced, richer and intentional rhythm of life with God.

What do you get?

Free small group sessions with a short online video and session notes, which are downloadable (3 A4 pages). Further backup and background articles and videos available for each session.

There are three suggested ways of starting lyfe using different time frames.

  • The Six Week Taster is ideal for groups new to lyfe. One session per title
  • Three Month Option works well over a single term. Two sessions per title
  • One Year Option allows you to explore all the small group sessions and create your own structured way of experiencing lyfe. Six sessions per title

Material available once sign up is completed (free).

In addition to this main material, there are further lyfe sessions created with various other themes, available to buy from the Bible Society website eg Messy lyfe (with Messy Church); Get Moving (with Fitfish); Sports lyfe (with various athletes); Big Hearted lyfe (with Chris Duffett); Life Streams (how to set up a Spiritual Formation Group). These cost £9.99 for six sessions.

Extra resources from time to time via site and Bible Society app, such as lyfe detox, daily podcasts and posts for the individual (January 2016); retreats; lyfe coaching for church and ministry leaders (1 year course).

  • What is the overall quality of material presentation?

    Easy to use, attractive and engaging resource, with some profound teaching and good opportunities to explore the Bible personally and grow as a Christian. Excellent material.

    How clear are its aims and outcomes?

    Each topic aim is clearly flagged up at the beginning of the session notes.

    How accessible are the leader's notes?

    Sessions comprise: Introductory paragraph; Review of previous session, video (3 minutes or so); Reading; Reflect (including notes on the passage, a couple of questions plus the invitation to consider what are the ‘shockers and blockers' for each person from the passage); Respond (responding to the topic with a challenge for action); Going Deeper (Further suggestions for developing one's relationship with God). No leader's notes as such, but obvious and easy to use. Clearly laid out session notes pages. Excellent backup material – big range of articles on both the topic, and the lives of Christians who have lived it out.

    Who could lead it?

    Any leader with a little experience, to encourage individual responses and engagement with the material.

    How helpful are the participants' resources?

    Downloadable from the site, just the set of session notes for all. Personal daily Bible reading notes available via the website.

    How good is any digital material?

    Excellent input on the short videos, from a variety of top quality speakers, including Dallas Willard, Paula Gooder, Andy Croft, Pete Grieg, Andy Flannagan and others.

    How much prep will I have to do?

    Set up the video to watch, download and print the session notes, familiarisation with the material.

    Is there website support? Links?

    Lyfe is on the Bible Society website, with a facility to tick off the topics as one goes through. Bible Society app. Extra resources from time to time via site and app, such as lyfe detox, daily podcasts and posts for the individual (January 2016).

  • How well does it encourage interaction with the group?

    Each section invites people to participate, discuss, engage with the biblical material and be honest.

    How well does it cater for a variety of both learning and delivery styles?

    Good creative range of responses to the subject. Invitation to create own responses if suggestions don't appeal.

    How adaptable is it to my situation?

    Should suit a wide variety of groups and Christian backgrounds. Would provide a change from the read-question-answer approach as the videos and suggestions widen the scope of the subject very well.

    How well does it encourage people to work together in applying the material?

    Responding with action is the focus every time, with lots of suggestions for helpful practices. Review slot highlights this.

  • How much of the material is Bible-based?

    Each session is based around one passage, which is printed out in full in the downloadable notes.

    How well is the biblical material presented and used?

    Great invitation to look for the ‘shockers and blockers' in each passage – the things that stand out or raise questions. Very helpful and succinct notes, just in bullet points, then a couple of good application questions.

    How well does it apply biblical material to everyday life?

    Questions and ‘shocker/blocker' idea focus engagement personally with the passage. Respond and Going Deeper sections develop this further.

    Is there a particular theological perspective?

    Broadly evangelical but suitable for a wide range of backgrounds.

  • How well does it inspire people towards whole-life discipleship?

    An innovative way to engage with biblical material that encourages practical responses, and life changes. Much of the video material is inspiring, while still being realistic. All topics are relevant to growing as a disciple.

    How well does it encourage and enable people to grow in their faith?

    Lots of practical stuff; lots of suggested ‘baby steps' towards new ways of being.

    How well does it stretch faith and vision of God and his purposes?

    Each session revolves well around the particular passage it highlights. Responses to this should stretch understanding of possibilities in the Christian life. Holistic view of the Christian life, especially if the One Year option is chosen.

    How well does it connect with real life issues?

    Focus is on growing – the setting of real life is taken for granted. Hence the title lyfe.

  • How well does it encourage personal evangelism?

    Seen as an integral part of living God's mission in the world. Ideas and encouragement included.

    How well does it encourage local or network-based community involvement?

    Underlying vision for how the church, and Christians, can impact their surroundings when living as God wants them to. Invitation to play one's part.

    How well does it connect with global issues?

    Good consideration of these, plus more input in the backup material. Call to practical action always there.
