Overview

What does it say on the tin?

The model prayer of Jesus, found in Matthew 6:9-13, has always been the primary guide for believers in learning how to pray. This 10-part Lord’s Prayer lesson series was contributed by Tara Tegard and features original colouring sheets by Mandy Groce.

Each study walks children through the petitions of the prayer and the patterns they set for our own prayer times. We’ve included a large list of bonus activities, object lessons, and other helps for your teaching.

  • What is the overall quality of material presentation?

    Material presentation is very simple and uses a few headings followed by the main content. It takes minimal time to read through and is easy to understand and implement, while still incorporating some fun and creative ideas. Supplementary supplies are relatively cheap to come by and sessions are most effective with smaller groups, between 4-20 children. Very easy to use.

    How clear are its aims and outcomes?

    Each session lists a ‘main idea’ at the beginning which states what the children will learn in the context of prayer. For example, the ‘main idea’ for session two is ‘The Bible shows us not only how not to pray, but some helpful things to remember when praying.’

    How accessible are the leader’s notes?

    Leader notes are very accessible, with easy to understand instructions and word-for-word scripted talks so that those with less experience can run an effective Bible-based session too.

    Who could lead it?

    Christian adults passionate about teaching small groups of young children about Jesus.

    How helpful are the participants’ resources?

    Participant resources are composed of simple colouring pages as well as crafts the children will make to take home. All very easy to use.

    How good is any digital material?

    How much prep will I have to do?

    Preparation for this series is minimal and this resource is perfect as a pick-up-and-go type series. Leaders need to ensure they have all materials for crafts and games, and have completed the ‘teacher preparation’ at the beginning of each session. The content itself is quick to grasp and allows leaders with the least experience to confidently run a session as the main teaching is scripted for them. Perfect for smaller group sizes, and there are some adaptations for children of different ages. Extra resources needed are standard in most cases with need of a printer for colouring pages. There are a few occasions for going out of the usual craft cupboard but these are low cost, for example, little notebooks for each child to make a prayer journal. There is a leaders’ preparation list provided for each session.

  • How well does it encourage interaction with the group?

    Children interact with one another and the leader for the whole duration of each session. Most interaction with the leader is during the main teaching time where children answer questions, while interaction with peers is most evident during games, crafts and other optional ideas that leaders may add in. Leaders will get the most out of teaching children in this series with a smaller group as this allows all children to take part in the questions they ask during the talk time.

    How well does it cater for a variety of both learning and delivery styles?

    Children learn in the same pattern for each lesson. First by playing a game which introduces them to the topic for the session, then by listening to the teacher and answering as well as asking questions, and finally by completing a craft and colouring sheet which apply the learning and in some cases help set children up with practical tools for how to pray.

    How adaptable is it to my situation?

    This series focuses on prayer, how to pray, why we pray and what can happen when we pray. It is a brilliant tool for teaching children a key aspect of discipleship, and introduces them to important guidance Jesus gave on how to pray. This series is most appropriate for children aged 4 - 8 years old and is composed of 4 main parts: teacher preparation, game, main message and craft. To get the most out of this series, it is best used with smaller groups as prayer is an important tool for their Christian lives, I would recommend 4 - 20 children is a good size to ensure they stay engaged and can ask any questions they may have. Resources are all available online but leaders will need to collect materials for crafts and games in advance, which are all low cost and include some variations depending on budget. A very good and easy get-up-and-go series which is easy to implement and understand, and can be led by leaders of any experience due to the scripted main message which ensures the content stays true to the Bible. There is a list of what leaders need to do for preparation prior to each session. These sessions must be run in chronological order.

    How well does it encourage people to work together in applying the material?

    Material is applied both conceptually and practically mostly as individuals, but in engaging ways. For example, children learn about the Lord’s Prayer and God’s forgiveness. They then make a chalk board which can be dirtied and cleaned again as a metaphor for Jesus cleaning away our sins.

  • How much of the material is Bible-based?

    Each session is composed of a game, message and craft. This means one third of the time is spent on the Bible talk and interpretation but leaders can choose how long in minutes each section lasts as this is not defined.

    How well is the biblical material presented and used?

    Biblical material is presented by the leader talking to the children, asking questions and using props throughout. Each week children open a special letter from God containing the next part of the Lord’s Prayer. The main teaching has a good mix of passages used to support the main message, and doesn’t just use the Lord’s Prayer. Children then apply what they have learnt to a take home craft. For example, when learning about staying righteous and on the right path, children then are given a map to draw twists and turns and can annotate what may cause a twist and what can help them stay straight.

    How well does it apply biblical material to everyday life?

    Children apply material to everyday life in every session by learning about the Lord’s Prayer and what each sentence means for their lives. For example, they learn that by asking for daily bread, they are asking God for the physical things they need. They then make a menu of all their favourite food needs, as well as spiritual needs to help them every day.

    Is there a particular theological perspective?

    This series teaches children about the trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and then goes on to help children pray by use of teaching the Lord’s Prayer.

  • How well does it inspire people towards whole-life discipleship?

    This series is brilliant at promoting whole-life discipleship by practically teaching children the tools they need for prayer and by explaining what each section means as well as what it refers to in their lives today. For example, in session two they make prayer journals which they can use in subsequent sessions, teaching them more on how to pray and why we pray.

    How well does it encourage and enable people to grow in their faith?

    Children grow in their faith in two ways. Firstly, by learning the practical skills of why, when, how and what to pray. Secondly, by learning how each line of the Lord’s Prayer shows us how God wants us to act and who we are in him, because he knows what is best for us. Children don’t just pray the Lord’s Prayer blindly, but learn what it means today and apply the metaphors to their own lives.

    How well does it stretch faith and vision of God and his purposes?

    Two key areas of God’s purposes are covered in this series. The first is Jesus and his being sent for our sins to restore our relationship with God, and so there is authority in learning about how we should pray from him. The second, is covered in lesson 5 which looks at what it means for God’s kingdom to come. Children are invited to explore God’s kingdom and what it is like, and learn that it is the most practical thing we can take part in on earth too; bringing God’s kingdom to earth in what we do and who we are.

    How well does it connect with real life issues?

    Gently for the age group. Children learn that God is their father in heaven and that they can always rely on him but that they also should treat him with respect and gratitude as he wants the best things for their lives.

  • How well does it encourage personal evangelism?

    Sessions five and ten invite children to make crafts to tell others about Jesus, as they learn that his kingdom is for everyone, but they have a role in inviting people in. Children learn that by praising God, they can show Jesus to people around them.

    How well does it encourage local or network-based community involvement?

    Gently through teaching children about God sending Jesus for all people. Children make invitations in one session to invite people in their community to know God.

    How well does it connect with global issues?
